Why water quality matters for coffee machines

Hard water carries dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium. When it is heated, those minerals usually deposit as scale in boilers, on heating elements and in small jets and valves, and scale is a common cause of heating and flow faults in espresso and coffee machines. Descaling removes scale once it has formed; suitable filtration helps stop it forming in the first place.

Water composition also affects extraction, so the same beans and recipe can taste flat or harsh depending on the water used. Removing everything is not the answer either: very soft or demineralized water can be aggressive towards metal parts, which is why reverse osmosis is usually paired with remineralization.

Typical signs that water is affecting your equipment:

• White, chalky deposits around group heads, steam wands or hot water outlets
• Flow that slows down, or small jets and valves that block
• Brew temperature that is harder to keep stable
• Coffee that tastes different although nothing else has changed

UF or RO + remineralization: which do you need?

Both are commercial water filtration solutions, but they do different jobs. Which one suits you depends on your incoming water and your equipment, so tell us your machines and setup, and we will recommend the right option.

• Ultrafiltration (UF) systems: UF membranes typically filter out fine particles and sediment but leave dissolved minerals in the water, so UF on its own does not soften hard water.
• Commercial reverse osmosis (RO) + remineralization: RO typically removes most dissolved solids, including the minerals that cause hardness, and remineralization then adds back a controlled mineral content suited to coffee.

Annual filter replacement contracts

Filter cartridges and membranes are used up over time, usually at a rate that depends on water quality and the volume passing through them. An exhausted filter no longer protects the machine, often without any obvious sign at the bar.
